Nationwide Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Raises Concerns
Infections caused by the cyclospora parasite, often referred to as the “explosive diarrhea” parasite, have been reported across nearly every state in the United States as of early August 2026. This alarming spread of cyclosporiasis has prompted health officials to issue warnings about certain foods that may be linked to the outbreak.
As the outbreak expands to 47 states, health experts are urging the public to exercise caution when consuming fresh produce, particularly items such as salads, berries, and other fruits and vegetables that may not be cooked before consumption. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been closely monitoring the situation and is working to identify the sources of contamination to help prevent further infections.
Symptoms and Prevention
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis typically include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue, which can last for several weeks if left untreated. Health officials recommend that individuals who experience these symptoms after consuming potentially contaminated food seek medical attention promptly. In many cases, antibiotics can effectively treat the infection.
